About SMART

Mission Statement

SMART Family Literacy is dedicated to assisting vulnerable and underserved populations in achieving self-sufficiency.

What SMART Does

SMART Family Literacy works to put new high quality books into the hands of children and families in need.  At SMART events, reading is a social experience, fun for everyone. We visit schools and community centers, read aloud to and with audiences, and give away books.  Like Johnny and his famous apple seeds, the books and experiences are planted and communities bloom and grow.

SMART Family Literacy forms partnerships with schools and other nonprofit organizations to reach many households in need of age-appropriate,  culturally appropriate, or topic specific books for children.

SMART programs contain content in science, math, art, and/or technology.
SMART audiences participate in activities and experiences leading to increased reading fluency and comprehension.
SMART programs motivate readers to return voluntarily and frequently by being fun and social.

SMART Family Literacy Board Members provide presentations at conferences and workshops, supporting the professional development of teachers and early childcare providers and the growth of parenting skills.  In addition to providing professional development at specific schools or community centers, our Board Members have presented sessions at conferences for the following:

Galveston Early Childhood Collaborative
Houston Area Education for Young Children
Texas Education for Young Children
Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching (Science Teachers Association of Texas)
National Marine Educators Association.

History of SMART Family Literacy

SMART is an original instructional approach used by the SMART Family Literacy Project. SMART was created by Elizabeth Turner in 1999 to help her son, Andrew, who had lost interest in reading.  SMART Parties turned reading into a fun and social experience. Andrew, who has Down’s syndrome, invited many friends and their families to the SMART Parties and his love of reading was renewed.

The love of reading was also contagious and the parties gradually grew from a few friends with books and popcorn to much larger parties with many people enjoying balloons, mystery boxes, science, and math experiments.  They read aloud with karaoke machines and acted out stories while using simple props (reader's theatre).  Hundreds of people attended the SMART Parties in the Turner home over several years.  Parents noticed the benefits for their children and kept the parties going.

Since SMART Family Literacy became a nonprofit charitable organization, leaving a single neighborhood, and branching out to schools and community centers in 2004, thousands of children and their families have enjoyed reading the books given to them through the hands of caring SMART Volunteers. The project has friends in Texas, El Salvador, South Africa and India. Andrew, now an adult, is a volunteer with the project and has personally read to children and given hundreds of books.
