Position Description: The literacy outreach coordinator serves an important social role in the professional leadership team, connecting the diverse community with the nonprofit organization’s early childhood and health literacy program opportunities and resources. The literacy outreach coordinator engages families with fun reading parties and family-friendly health literacy events. Working with people of all ages and education levels is essential to the interaction with volunteers and partners, who make the large outreach possible for a relatively small staff. Educational outdoor events, in high demand since the pandemic, are one of several opportunities for expansion of this role.

SMART Family Literacy is a high impact, growing charitable organization, known for its reading parties, vegetable teaching gardens, outdoor education, and generous distribution of 30,000 children’s books annually in Galveston County, Texas. The mission is to deliver active, innovative, and inclusive educational programs, integrating science, math, art, reading, and technology (SMART), so that learners of all ages can achieve and thrive. SMART gives equal attention to academics and health in its programs, which include research and evidence-based practices, as well as locally customized relevant topics.  

Position Responsibilities:

The Literacy Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Planning and implementing 40 to 50 inclusive active family engagement events annually.  

  • Recruiting, training, engaging, and facilitating volunteer individuals and groups of all ages and education levels for outdoor and indoor tasks.

  • Face-to-face outreach to hundreds of childcare centers and elementary school classrooms, especially those separated by the digital divide and ESL barriers.

  • Reading aloud to children and their parents during evening and Saturday family events.

  • Overseeing the SMART Children’s Book Bank and distribution of 30,000 children’s books annually in Galveston County to educationally matched recipients.

  • Working with the team to maintain, organize, and analyze data, update mailing lists, and communicate regularly with parents, educators, and volunteers regarding opportunities and content in science, math, art, reading, and technology (SMART).

  • Communicating effectively through multiple methods, including websites, social media, digital newsletters, and other emerging formats to achieve the mission outcomes and outputs.

  • Working with the team to achieve grant goals and objectives, meeting required deadlines.

  • Accepting other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of SMART Family Literacy.


The literacy outreach coordinator must:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in one of the following fields: education, medical, social work, science, math, art, reading, or technology (SMART).

  • Possess a high level of accuracy in written and spoken English language skills, including digital communication. Additional language abilities, especially Spanish, are an asset.  

  • Enjoy connecting people of all ages to other people and resources.

  • Work well with a team, inspiring, creating, and collaborating with others.

  • Possess a high level of integrity and independence.

  • Manage schedules for self and others, working some evenings and weekends.

  • Model a heart-healthy lifestyle, willing to consume fresh vegetables and provide physically active programs, to facilitate the early childhood health mission.

  • Lift, push or carry a minimum of 50 lbs., work in harsh environments, and operate a vehicle.

  • A valid driver's license is required.


Salary is commensurate with experience and education level.

This position is full-time, exempt, 12 months. 

Generous personal/vacation/sick leave after six months.

This position is not remote.
