EVERYONE PARTICIPATES. EVERYONE READS. EVERYONE THINKS.
What makes SMART reading programs so smart?
We use classroom sets of books so that every child in a classroom holds a copy of the book we're reading. The book itself becomes part of the hands-on experience.
Programs are rich in vocabulary and make language fun. In the thirty minutes, children hear and say many words, including those that are often considered above their level.
Children participate in a picture walk before listening or echo reading (repeating after a reading leader). They make their own decisions about their opinions of the illustrations.
Children receive a copy of a book of their choice, which helps them build a small home library. Children need age appropriate books to read at home, so they can practice and retain what they learned at school.
SMART is able to use classroom sets and able to give books to individual children because of the generous donations of foundations, individuals, and businesses. Our work is labor intensive and is accomplished through the efforts of dedicated volunteers. Our donors and volunteers work together with teachers to share the gift of literacy.
