My Story

In the 6th grade in Southern Maine, I decided that I would attend Texas A&M University at Galveston (TAMUG) for Marine Biology and become a high school science teacher - just like my academic hero and uncle, Dr. Joseph E. "Doc" McCarthy.  While many doubted a plan made so far in advance, I was also as tenacious and strong-willed as Doc. Letting nothing deter my plan, I graduated from high school, packed all of my belongings into my tiny hatchback, and drove across the country beginning an adventure that I never could have imagined.

Upon completion of my BS in Marine Biology from TAMUG, I was hired to teach high school Biology and Aquatic Science. While teaching at the high school, I gained experience in teaching at-risk students, special education, English as a second language, gifted and talented instruction, and various forms of curriculum and instruction. I served as the Science Department Head, and was never content with "just teaching." I found myself training for external companies and serving on committees that included instructional design and assessment, technology integration in the classroom, and more. My love for life-long learning has never ceased and I completed my first master's degree in School Administration from Lamar University.

After 5 years of teaching at the high school level, I stretched my science-loving legs and jumped completely outside of my comfort zone by teaching middle school. The experience was an emotional roller coaster in many ways and ended with much soul-searching. After 7 years, I decided that my passion for education could not be contained within a classroom. I left the classroom not knowing exactly what my future may hold.

Just after Hurricane Harvey, SMART Founder Elizabeth Turner asked me to help her give away books to children who were impacted during the storm. Thinking that she was asking me to volunteer, I was excited to be involved. Little did I know that she was offering me employment that would bring the true form of my passion for education to fruition. In my tenure with SMART Family Literacy, I have built a career of advocating and supporting small children in the fastest and most important brain-building years of their lives. By training, mentoring, and consulting with early education professionals, I am able to support directors, teachers, children, and families in laying a stable foundation for the future.

After completing my second master's degree in Early Childhood Education through the University of Houston - Clear Lake, I became an adjunct professor for the same campus. This connection to higher education is wound tightly within the work that I do with SMART Family Literacy as I now enjoy a life dedicated to education for all ages.
